Capturing the essence of love in Chicago during a POLAR VORTEX (!!) was an exhilarating experience with Rebecca & Farooq. Their engagement session was a vibrant tour across a few locations & it wasn’t just about the photos we took—it was a celebration of their unique story.
Engagement sessions don’t have to be in one location, with one outfit, with one vibe. If it’s your thing, you can dream bigger. Here’s a few steps to get you there.
Start somewhere simple, but aesthetic. This is a great place to start. A blank canvas will offer us some fun to mess around and get out your nerves. This could be a beautiful field, a beautiful graffiti wall, or a riverside (for Rebecca & Farooq, we had a walk through the streets and looked at the semi-frozen Chicago canal)
Shift somewhere cozy. This is where we cuddle up, get close, and have staring contests (uh… you, not me. ;)) If in a more urban area, this could be your favorite coffee shop or a bookstore. If we’re out in nature, this could be in the shade of a big tree or a secluded spot to sit together.
Find a grand view. Every story deserves a grand setting. Find a location with a breathtaking view, like a city skyline or a scenic overlook. For Rebecca & Farooq, we looked over the icy blue of Lake Michigan with the skyline of the city behind them.
Revisit memories: did you have, like, the cutest first date ever at the drive-in movies? Or maybe he surprised you with a spring picnic by a babbling brook on your anniversary. Let’s reenact those memories—they’re important.
Imagine your life as a movie: what would you, the main character of your story, be planning? Where would she be playfully pulling her fiancé, laughing and blushing? Would he be carrying a love letter to give to her? Does she always wear flowers in her hair during dates? You can make things up!
Incorporate symbols: Bring along items that have special significance in your relationship. It could be a vintage camera, family heirlooms, your favorite books, or your favorite flowers. These elements will help the session be more meaningful overall.
*cough* *cough* photography is important, though. 😉
It’s about experiencing and capturing your journey in a way that’s uniquely yours.
My approach in engagement and wedding photography is to not only capture these moments but to create a comfortable space for you to relive and cherish your story. If you’re looking for a photographer who can turn your love story into a beautiful visual narrative, filled with authentic moments and a touch of adventure, let’s make magic together!
